The GBD 2017 Italy Cardiovascular Diseases Collaborators, led by Dr Paolo Cortesi, recently published in European Journal of Preventive Cardiology an assessment of the trends in cardiovascular diseases burden and vascular risk factors in Italy, leveraging the Global Burden of Disease 2017 study estimates.
The results show a decline in cardiovascular mortality and disability-adjusted life years, reflecting the success in reducing disability, premature death and early incidence of cardiovascular diseases. At the same time, the burden of cardiovascular diseases remains very high, calling for an integrated and coordinated approach by all stakeholders of the Italian National Health System to further reduce this burden.
The authors also analyzed the relationship between cardiovascular DALYs and Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) in the 28 European Union countries, both in 1990 and 2017, to examine changes in CVD DALYs burden as a function of development.
