Small countries usually face a number of challenges to conduct national burden of disease studies, amongst others due to the lack of specific expertise and resources or absence of adequate data. In a new Commentary published in Archives of Public Health, representatives of Europe’s small countries (Cyprus, Iceland, Luxembourg, Malta and Montenegro) discuss the unique challenges they face when engaging in such a study. They conclude that investing in sharing expert knowledge through the European Burden of Disease Network can facilitate the conduct of country specific BoD studies and the establishment of more accurate DALY estimates.
